Wrocław Breaks Its Own Record With Massive 'Hey Joe' Guitar Performance

The Polish city of Wrocław once again found itself in the headlines, having beaten its own world record. On Thursday, the Market Square of the city was crowded with 8,122 musicians playing Hey Joe, a classic tune by Jimi Hendrix.

This is a tradition that started in 2003 when a mere 588 guitarists participated in setting the first record of this kind. It was the momentous occasion since that day, the meeting grew in size annually, with thousands of musicians coming to Wrocław, hoping to defeat the previous record. Last year’s meeting was a bit underwhelming, as around 7,531 musicians participated while in 2023 the record was 7,967.

This event is dominantly about the number of guitars, but other stringed instruments, such as basses, mandolins, and ukuleles, are also welcome. The event is called Thanks Jimi, dedicated to the musician and his music. This year, the slogan was ‘Remember Woodstock,’ as people wore vintage clothes and played other hits from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the most popular Hendrix songs other than Hey Joe that people played included Foxy Lady, Voodoo Chile, and Little Wing.

The creator of the idea was Leszek Cichoński, a renowned guitar instructor and musician. He began the tradition due to a mere coincidence, as he played Hey Joe along with 17 others at a blues workshop in 1997.
