Who Is Ülle Madise?
At 51 years old, Madise brings a background steeped in law and public service to the position. She's served as Estonia's human rights ombudsman since 2015, a role that positioned her well for the presidency. Her term will run for five years, and she'll now represent the country on the world stage in a role that, while mostly symbolic, still carries real weight when it comes to shaping national identity and values.

A Nation on NATO's Front Line
With a population of just 1.4 million people, Estonia shares a border with Russia and has positioned itself as one of Ukraine's most vocal backers throughout the ongoing conflict. The country has also been outspoken in its criticism of Moscow, both within NATO and the European Union. That stance comes with serious financial commitment too - Estonia has emerged as one of the top defence spenders among its allies, setting aside 5.4% of its gross domestic product for military spending this year alone.

How the Election Unfolded
Unlike many countries where the public votes directly for their leader, Estonia's presidency is decided by its parliament, the Riigikogu. In this case, Madise didn't face any real competition - no opposing candidate managed to gather enough support from lawmakers to even get on the ballot, so she ran unopposed. She now takes over from outgoing president Alar Karis, who chose not to pursue a second term in office.
