As a surprise, General Wiesław Kukuła, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, warned Belarus, before anyone except the Russians knew that Poland was being violated, that Poland was about to experience an event of multiple drones crossing the border. Kukuła said that the notice was "helpful", but surprising because Belarus is entirely aligned with Russia, with whom its relationship with Poland can often be difficult. Kukuła also said that Warsaw sent reciprocal information about aerial objects that were also flying toward Belarus.

Belarus later, in fact, asserted that it warned Poland about the drones in "real time." Belarus' Chief of the General Staff, Pavel Muraveiko, hypothesised that the unmanned aircraft had simply gotten lost as a function of electronic jamming and had strayed off course due to combat taking place between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

Border Tensions are on the Rise
This drone incident came just hours after Poland announced that it had closed its border crossings with Belarus. This decision follows the announcement of the Zapad military exercises, which are joint Russian-Belarusian military warfare exercises, held Friday-Monday of this week. Following the drone event, Poland extended the closure "until further notice".

Poland has accused Belarus and Russia of trying to destabilise the EU, as Poland believes that they have been trying to send migrants from Asia and Africa through the border. Poland has now also built border fortifications, presumably because their border is important towards protecting NATO's eastern flank.

Things escalated further this week, when Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that Polish security services detained a "Belarusian agent" and removed a diplomat who assisted a hostile intelligence operation.

Contradicting Claims 
Belarus said that the drones were lost because they weren't supposed to cross the border. Moreover, Poland maintained that the aircraft should not have violated the Polish airspace, nor was it an act of provocation. Rossia denies that it intends to unlawfully violate Poland's aerial space, and additionally claimed that the drone came from Ukraine.

The latest event has showcased just how fast the Polish-Belarusian border is changing into, or out of, normalcy, re-escalating regional security concerns with military drills, drone crossings, and Intelligence disputes.
