Czech Tennis Star Vondroušová Banned Four Years for Test Refusal

One of tennis's most recognizable champions is now facing the longest stretch of her career away from the court — not through injury or retirement, but through a doping-related suspension. Markéta Vondroušová, the Czech star who won Wimbledon and reached two Grand Slam finals, has been handed a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency for refusing to submit to an anti-doping test last December. The suspension runs until June 21, 2030, by which point she will be 30 years old.

What Happened on December 3
The incident at the center of this case took place at Vondroušová's home on the evening of December 3, around 8 p.m., when a doping control officer arrived for an out-of-competition test. She declined to provide a sample. During her hearing, Vondroušová cited stress, deteriorating mental health, and personal safety concerns as factors that clouded her judgment at the time. The tribunal, however, found those explanations unconvincing. The ITIA stated that the evidence presented offered no compelling justification for the refusal, and the four-year ban was upheld accordingly.

Vondroušová Pushes Back, Legal Team Weighs Options
The former world number six has been firm in her response. Writing on Instagram, she insisted she has never used performance-enhancing substances and pointed out that a test taken just three days after the December 3 incident returned a negative result. She emphasized that every anti-doping test throughout her entire career has come back clean, and that she has always competed with a clear conscience.

Her legal representative confirmed they would carefully study the written reasoning behind the decision before determining their next steps, though no specific course of action has been announced yet. Vondroušová had already been absent from competition since withdrawing from the Adelaide International in January due to a shoulder injury, making this ban an even heavier blow to her career.
