Fire Destroys 200+ Homes in Warsaw Suburb of ZÄ…bki

More than 200 apartments were destroyed in a massive fire that broke out on Thursday evening in the Warsaw suburb of ZÄ…bki, causing some 500 people to be evacuated, local media reported. The fire broke out at about 7 p.m. in an attic in a building in a U-shaped housing complex, and quickly raced across the rooftops in a strong wind and high temperatures of the sweeping European heatwave.

Early Friday, firefighters had the blaze knocked down, but emergency crews were to patrol the crash site overnight to douse hot spots and check for structural damage. "There is no more roof," said Brigadier General Wojciech Kruczek, the chief commander of the State Fire Service, who said all units on the complex's fourth floor were lost. Fire and water damage are extensive on the lower floors as well.

Injuries, Health Alerts, and Community Response
Three residents were treated for slight injuries, and one firefighter was taken to the hospital with a sprained ankle. The smoke and particles knocked air quality far below safe levels, and officials issued urgent health warnings. Residents were told to take cover indoors, close windows and avoid the area. Emergency warnings were issued, and a car sent messages over loudspeakers in the area with safety tips.

Residents set up a Facebook support group within a few hours of the fire, in an extraordinary show of solidarity. Now with more than 4,000 members, the group collaborates on everything from shelter to food to hygiene supplies, pet care and more. Scouts from the local Zabki troop organised aid at a nearby school and told people not to overwhelm emergency centres.

Government Aid and Investigation Underway
The government will also provide financial support for the victims, said Finance Minister Andrzej DomaÅ„ski. "Relief will come in the state budget, that's for sure," he said. Each household affected will get a first emergency payment of 8,000 zÅ‚oty (€1,900), Mazowieckie Voivode Mariusz Frankowski said, with more help possible after assessments of the damage.

It is not known what caused the fire. Spokesman Adam Szłapka promised "a comprehensive explanation" of the fire. Army leaders held a crisis management meeting Friday morning to coordinate the emergency response and support efforts by those in the affected areas, officials said.
