Firefighters Battle Huge Blaze at Polish Shopping Mall

A large-scale fire broke out at the Galeria Podolany shopping mall in Poznań, western Poland, on Sunday night, prompting a large response to the fire. On Monday morning, more than 100 firefighters and numerous engines were on the scene, containing the fire which continued to burn on Monday morning.

Fire Spreads From Store to Mall's Roof, Firefighters Fight Through the Night
The fire originated nearby the store on Sunday night, spreading to the roof of the Galeria Podolany mall in the northern part of the city. The fire brigade received the first fire alert, which reported to have come about 9 p.m. and was still working to control the situation through the night and into Monday morning. By Monday morning, there were still 14 fire engines on site.

A fire service spokesperson stated the fire was mostly contained to the roof area of the mall. "We were able to protect a lot of buildings," he stated, "However, it spread to the section next to the shop."

Authorities also confirmed that no injuries were reported, but firefighters were pulled back from the fire site for the time being due to safety risks.

Damage and Investigation Underway
Parts of the shopping centre were damaged by the fire, including a food store and a parrot house that housed exotic birds. Adam Kobyłka, from the Poznań fire department, reported that they didn't have any information about the conditions of the animals.

Firefighters also continued the fight to fully extinguish the hotspots still smoking on Monday, while also investigating the damage and possible cause of the fire.
