The team has since restored such impressive portions as sphinx statues and Osirian figures of Pharaoh Hatshepsut in the guise of the god Osiris. They are now among the most-photographed monuments in Egypt. Polish sculptor Wojciech Myjak, who was part of the expedition, headed teh reconstruction effort.

“The statues restored today are not only those that decorate the Hatshepsut Temple but they are also a symbol of Nile tourism,” Dr Patryk Chudzik from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw told the Polish Press Agency.

Its design, which is noteworthy for its screen-like facade, can be found at Deir el-Bahari, on the west bank of the Nile. Perched on dramatic cliffs in the royal necropolis, it draws millions of visitors every year.

“Thanks to modern archaeology, we have been able to discover fragments of these sculptures,” Chudzik said. "Since our team started working in 1961, additional statue fragments have been revealed, and the pace of discoveries is ongoing."

Several of the original statues were defaced following the death of Hatshepsut. Her stepson and successor, Pharaoh Thutmose III, attempted to obliterate her memory by removing her name from all traces and representations and destroying her statues.

This restoration is a result of the ongoing project of the Polish-Egyptian Archaeological and Conservation Mission. The project is co-led by the University of Warsaw's Center of Mediterranean Archaeology and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
