The Pole had his chances. In the second-set tie-break, he could not turn any of four set points into a win, and the Spaniard took the set and the match. It was the kind of ending that will sting for a while.

For Davidovich Fokina, the win carries extra weight. It is his second ATP Tour title, following his first earlier this season in Mallorca. Before that breakthrough, he had lost all five of the ATP finals he had played, so the wait for silverware was a long one.

A Difficult Season Starts to Turn
Hurkacz was playing his 13th ATP final, and it came after a tough season affected by a long-term injury. He is still waiting for his ninth career title, which has eluded him since April 2024, when he won the Estoril Open in Portugal.

The 29-year-old from Wrocław took home $107,000 for reaching the final. Along with the ranking boost, it is a welcome sign that his form is heading in the right direction.

There is little time to dwell on the loss. Hurkacz now has to head quickly to Beijing, where an ATP 500 event begins on Wednesday. His first-round opponent will be American Learner Tien.
