Poland Defeats Cuba 3-0 in Volleyball Nations League Opener

Poland wasted no time making a statement at this year's Men's Volleyball Nations League. The reigning champions kicked off their title defense with a convincing 3-0 sweep against Cuba on Wednesday, played in the Chinese city of Linyi. From the very first set, it was clear Poland meant business — and the result sent an early message to every other team in the competition.

Set by Set: How Poland Controlled the Match
The opening set belonged almost entirely to Poland. A serve from Michał Gierżot gave the Poles an early 6-3 cushion, and Cuba never really found a way back in. Errors from the Cuban side helped Poland pull further ahead, eventually closing out the first set 25-16 with little fuss.

The second set was a different story, at least for a while. Cuba showed more fight and pushed the score to 12-13, making it genuinely competitive for a stretch. But Poland's composure held. A run of strong blocks broke Cuba's rhythm, and Poland sealed the set 25-20 to move within one of a clean sweep.

The third set started in Poland's favor with a 6-1 lead, but Cuba refused to fold. Good attacking play and some unforced errors from Poland allowed Cuba to claw back and briefly lead 12-11. It was the closest the match got to a real contest. Ultimately, contributions from Bartosz Gomułka and promising newcomer Jakub Majchrzak proved decisive, as Poland closed out the final set 25-21 to complete a dominant straight-sets victory.

Poland's Record and What Comes Next
This win was built on a squad that blended experience with fresh faces. Poland fielded both seasoned players and those with limited international appearances, yet the team looked cohesive and sharp throughout.

The result continues Poland's remarkable record in this competition. Since the Men's Volleyball Nations League began in 2018, Poland has been its most decorated nation — collecting six medals across seven editions, including two gold, one silver, and three bronze. Last year's title was their second gold overall.

Up next for Poland is a busy schedule. They face Slovenia on Thursday, then Japan on Friday, and close the week against Ukraine on Sunday. The 2026 tournament runs in China from June 10 through August 2.

On the women's side, the Polish team has also been performing well since their campaign began on June 3, winning three of their first four matches. The women's squad has earned bronze medals at this event three years running, adding another layer of pride to Poland's volleyball story this season.
