Poland's road to this match wasn't a straight line either. They had battled past the Netherlands in the quarterfinals to book a semifinal spot, only to fall 3-1 to Italy on Saturday, a result that pushed them into the bronze-medal playoff instead of a shot at gold. With this latest defeat, Poland's search for European Championship glory rolls on, their most recent medal dating back to 2009, when they claimed bronze by beating Germany.

Beach Volleyball Delivers A Bright Spot
While the senior women's team came up short, Poland still had reason to celebrate on Sunday. At the U20 European Beach Volleyball Championships in Battipaglia, Italy, the duo of Zuzanna Kudlik and Hanna Leśniewicz fought their way to bronze. They edged out Belarus's Nadzeya Tsishkova and Veranika Hrom in a tight three-set battle, winning 22-20, 10-21, 15-13, giving Poland something positive to take from an otherwise mixed weekend on the volleyball court.
