A second inter-modal terminal will form part of the project and will include seven new tracks as well as modern transshipment equipment. The terminal’s capacity will be more than doubled, from the 285,000 TEU of today to 530,000 TEU, an addition of 100% of the handling capacity. Twenty-foot equivalent unit, or TEU, is a standard unit of measurement for container capacity.
The investment will develop the transport and logistics market in Poland, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure. Dariusz Klimczak, Minister: Expanding the Terminal in Sławków is a strategic move for the national economy.
Strategic Location and Broad-Gauge Propensity
Euroterminal Sławków is one of the key logistics centres in Poland and in Central-Eastern Europe. The only facility in the European Union with access to the LHS broad-gauge line, which extends from a border with Ukraine near Hrubieszów to Sławków. Transshipment of goods from Asia is possible here without breaking the railway gauge, which saves time and money.
The geographical location of the terminal is another factor contributing to its significance. Placed directly on the nodes of pan-european transport corridors, Sławków is a key point on the route from the east to the west of the continent and from the north to the south. Prime Minister Tusk stressed today the growing importance of the north-south route – from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean – and the priority of destinations in Italy and the Adriatic, with Sławków as the central land nodal point on the axis, as for which connecting the Western and Southern Polish provinces with Central and Eastern Europe.
