How the Race Unfolded
Vollering made her move with 38 kilometers still to go in the women's road race, opening a gap on the field. Niewiadoma-Phinney and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini did not let her get away, though, and managed to close the distance.

The trio stayed together for a while, but Longo Borghini eventually slipped back. That left the Pole and the Dutchwoman to settle the gold medal between them.

A Close Finish and a Milestone
Niewiadoma-Phinney started her sprint first, hoping to catch Vollering off guard. It was not enough. Vollering came around her before the line and took the title, while Longo Borghini rolled in for bronze.

The silver adds to Niewiadoma-Phinney's bronze from 2021. It also carries some weight for Polish cycling as a whole, as it is the country's 19th medal in the senior road race. Polish riders have won seven gold medals in the event.
