Polish Student Evacuated From China After Cancer Coma

A young Polish student who fell critically ill while studying in China has finally made it back home, carried on a military evacuation flight organized by the Polish government. Klaudia Uciechowska, 24, touched down in the southwestern city of Wrocław just before 4 pm on Wednesday, ending weeks of uncertainty and diplomatic efforts to bring her back. From the airport, she was transferred to a military hospital in Wrocław to continue her treatment. Uciechowska is originally from Wałbrzych, also located in southwestern Poland.

A Desperate Fight for Survival
The 24-year-old had been hospitalized in Beijing since mid-April, after being diagnosed with cancer. Following surgery to remove a tumour, her condition deteriorated, and she was placed in a medically induced coma, leaving her family in anguish thousands of kilometers away. Her mother described her daughter as fighting for her life throughout the ordeal.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz publicly acknowledged everyone who played a role in making the evacuation possible. He expressed hope that under the care of doctors at the Wrocław hospital, Klaudia would recover and eventually return to her family and the people who love her.

Diplomacy at the Highest Level
Getting Uciechowska home was not straightforward. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski explained that the biggest hurdles involved navigating Chinese administrative procedures and securing formal approval for a medical transfer of this kind. The Chinese authorities, however, moved quickly once the request was made. Bartoszewski noted that Beijing granted permission for the Polish government aircraft to fly over and land without significant delay, and he personally extended his gratitude to Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Hua Chunying for facilitating the process.

The case had drawn widespread attention across Poland, prompting officials in Warsaw to raise the matter at the highest diplomatic levels. Uciechowska had been in China to study the Chinese language when her health suddenly collapsed, turning what was meant to be an academic journey into a race against time.
