Russia Boosts Air Defenses at Key Drone Factory

Russia is tightening its air defenses around one of its most important drone factories as Ukraine keeps hitting military and logistics targets inside its territory. New satellite imagery shows fresh anti-aircraft infrastructure at the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, an industrial area in the central-east Tatarstan region.

What the Satellite Images Show
The images reveal new air defense towers and supporting infrastructure for Pantsir and Tor surface-to-air missile systems. The site also has turrets for heavy anti-aircraft guns, along with the ability to stretch anti-drone nets over key production buildings.

This matters because Alabuga is a major production hub for Russia's Geran/Shahed kamikaze drones, which Moscow uses heavily in its attacks on Ukraine. With more than 30 air defense positions, the zone is reportedly one of the best-protected places in Russia against drone strikes.

The Wider Drone War
The war in Ukraine began with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, and it has since become a conflict defined by drones. Smaller, relatively cheap first-person view drones and one-way kamikaze drones are now used on a huge scale. Russia has been working to upgrade this technology in the hope of breaking a stalemate that has dragged on for more than four and a half years, and it is increasingly deploying faster, jet-powered versions of these weapons.

Ukraine, for its part, has regularly struck military and energy infrastructure inside Russia. Kyiv says the aim is to weaken the Kremlin's ability to keep fighting.
