Severe Storms Prompt Over 700 Emergency Calls in Poland

A violent storm battered Poland over the weekend, prompting the country to upgrade its high storm alert to cover all regions. Emergency services were inundated, with more than 700 calls by 7 p.m., primarily from eastern and southern areas. "In the three worst affected provinces, we have received the support of extra personnel," the State Fire Service said.

Territorial defense volunteers were told to prepare for duty across the country as a precaution, Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The National Meteorological Office issued all three levels of storm warnings for all regions, indicating the intensity and unpredictability of the weather system.


More Storm Warnings Likely
Weather officials said the storms were starting to move beyond the eastern borders of Poland, but that more alerts might be required, depending on how conditions develop.

"We ask the public to remain vigilant and to follow the directions of local law enforcement," authorities said in a statement.
