A devastating fire that broke out in the southeastern Polish city of Rzeszów took the life of a 14-year-old girl and left eight others in hospital. Wednesday evening's fire at the 12-story residential building led to a massive emergency response and evacuation.

The fire was called in at about 8:40 p.m. and broke out on the fourth floor of the apartment building. Firefighters fought the flames as authorities evacuated about 250 people from the building.
Rescue and Investigation
Despite treatment by paramedics, including a medical rescue helicopter, the 14-year-old girl died at the scene. Policewoman Magdalena Żuk confirmed on Thursday morning that a post-mortem examination will be carried out on the girl's body.
Three of the eight victims who were hospitalized were children. Another man (69) was saved from the blaze in an adjoining apartment when he was rescued by emergency services. He was also taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
