The first of them captures Putin and Trump finger-pointing at one another during their high-stakes meeting in Alaska. The second is the iconic 1959 "Kitchen Debate" photograph of then–Vice President Richard Nixon staring down Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Moscow.

That encounter, at the American National Exhibition, became an iconic image of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry, a study in rival ideologies. By sharing the pair of photos side by side sans comment, Trump seemed to be placing himself in the role of Nixon, evoking a tougher, confrontational approach to Putin.

Alaska Summit Overshadowed by Escalation
The Russia-Aideroom meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska was supposed to be a chance to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine, now the bloodiest war in Europe since the end of World War II. The summit gave hope of a potential ceasefire, but there was no breakthrough.

Meanwhile, tensions have only escalated. Wednesday night, Russia mounted one of its heaviest air attacks of the war, firing more than 610 missiles and drones into Ukraine. Additionally, explosions were reported in Kyiv, in Lviv and regions near the Polish border, underscoring the scope of the continuing crisis.

Symbolism and Strategy
Though Trump has cast himself as a potential broker between Moscow and Kyiv, this Cold War-like blog post signals a change in tone. Nixon's 1959 debate with Khrushchev was blunt to an extent that both men used it to defend their political systems before the world. In pointing that out, Trump may well be signalling that future discussions with Putin might be more pointed.

Whether this political theatre is also a sign of a shift in U.S. policy or merely a symbol is yet to be confirmed. To date, the war grinds on, and diplomatic remedies seem even more remote.
