Ukraine Retakes Villages in Sumy Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit

Ukraine regained control of two villages in the eastern Sumy region on Friday, further reasserting its presence along a swathe of the border with Russia. The news broke on Friday, just days before Trump is slated to hold a peace summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump Suggests Land Giveaways May Be Needed

Building on Recent Gains
Bezsalivka is the third successful reclamation this week, after Stepne and Novokostiantynivka. Those are modest gains, but any movement is important after Russian forces have been inching deeper into the west for months, particularly around Donetsk.

Russian Offensive in Sumy
Russia reinvaded Sumy earlier this year after President Vladimir Putin ordered the creation of a "buffer zone" in the area that looked like it could soon pose a direct threat to Sumy city. Based on data from the Ukrainian Deep State mapping project, at least 200 square kilometers of land in the region today remains under Russian occupation, and across Ukraine, 114,000 square kilometers remain under effective or at least partial control by Russia.
