Ukraine Uses Ground Robot to Lay Barbed Wire

Ukraine's military is turning to robots for one of the most dangerous jobs on the battlefield. Ground vehicles are now installing coils of barbed wire along the front lines, which keeps combat engineers away from Russian snipers, drones and landmines.

How the Robot Gets the Job Done
Photos released by Ukraine's Ground Forces show an unmanned ground vehicle putting down wire obstacles while its crew from the 16th Separate Support Brigade operates it from a distance. The vehicle carries a sloped frame holding a coil of wire. As it rolls across the terrain, the barrier unwinds behind it, so soldiers never have to handle the wire themselves.

The Ground Forces explained the idea in a post on Tuesday. They said that setting up wire obstacles in open terrain has always been risky for engineers, but ground drones now handle that heavy work.

A Growing Role for Ground Robots
This is far from the first time Ukraine has leaned on such machines. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, ground robots have been used more and more along the front lines for attack missions, logistics and the evacuation of wounded personnel.

The numbers show how fast that role has grown. According to Ukraine's Defense Ministry, as of August, unmanned ground vehicles had carried out more than 100,000 logistics and evacuation missions since the start of 2026. Demand has pushed up purchases too, with Ukraine contracting more than 22,000 unmanned ground vehicles this year.
