Vilnius deploys drones after wild bear enters city

Drone surveillance and expert help ordered by mayor
The mayor of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, Valdas Benkunskas, said Monday that officials have started to evaluate drone capabilities and are cooperating with experts to enhance surveillance. The purpose is to catch the bear if, indeed, it should return. Benkunskas said they would also use thermal imaging technology to assist the search. While Vilnius lacks a specialized unit that captures wildlife, the mayor insisted that doing nothing was not an option.

Searches Centered on Bear's Final Known Position
The bear left the city on Sunday and was removed at an unidentified location, the Wildlife Care Centre at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences said in a statement. Drones have since been sent to the northern and northwestern outskirts of Vilnius, which is where the bear was last seen. Bear spotting in cities is highly unusual in Lithuania, where brown bears usually live in the wilderness of its thick forests.
