Warsaw and Krakow Among Europe's Safest Cities

Poland keeps moving into the places that fit for a European safest country for travellers, with Warsaw and Krakow both ranking in the top five on Europe's safest urban destinations. The ranking was compiled following analysis of crime levels and trends in major European cities over the past five years, according to the Safe Destinations Index.

Warsaw. Warsaw scored a safety rating of 60.2, which led to it ranking third overall. While the city's crime rate has inched up over the past few years, it remains very low overall. Post-war reconstruction is strong, modern facilities have sprouted, and city guards are regularly seen on the streets to ensure that the capital is safe for both residents and visitors. Evening strolls and visits to restored historic districts feel safe and pleasant.

Kraków – A Tourist-Friendly City
Kraków, the cultural capital of Poland, came fifth, with a safety score of 64.3. The city's overall welcoming environment, lack of crime and strong police presence at the most popular tourist areas made it highly ranked. Its well-lit Old Town (a bit of a rarity in some European cities), busy squares and dependable public transport can make the city feel entirely explorable to tourists as well.

Research, however, emphasized Krakow's popularity as a tourist destination, citing its historic appeal and easy access, providing a safe and enjoyable environment to the millions it attracts annually.

Other Safe European Hotspots
Outside of Poland, a number of other European destinations ranked highly for safety. Croatia's Dubrovnik bagged the top position for being the medieval treasure of pristine beauty, low crime and tourist efficiency. Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, was second, and Prague and Amsterdam also ranked in the top six safest cities.

While travel insiders admit that it does feel "pretty safe" in Warsaw and Krakow, they stress anyone travelling should be wary of new surroundings, not to mention employ "common sense" when in foreign lands.
