Zheng Outlasts Arango in Intense, Net-Dominant Match

Zheng’s victory was hard-fought, and she shrieked on her celebration after winning the final point to close out what had been a gut-wrenching match. Against World No. 85 Arango, Zheng had to battle through a gritty affair, particularly in the second set when 22 points lasted nine shots or longer. All of these exchanges featured a mix of huge topspin and well-timed slicing from both men. Arango impressively won 15 of those extended rallies.

“To play against Arango in defense is not easy,” said Zheng after the game. “It’s not easy for me to play with her,” said Zheng. “She could play great defense. When I see a short ball I say, ‘OK, now you got to go to the net to finish the point whatever happens,’ because if we’re staying on the baseline she’s going to put all the balls back, so it’s a very difficult match.”

It was Zheng’s insistence on attacking the net that was the difference. She claimed 18 of 21 net points and 31 total winners, underlining her aggressive and productive style. The fact that she was able to adjust and control it in the most crucial of points, eventually winning her the match.
