Poland's Świątek and Chwalińska Both Storm Into Wuhan Quarterfinals

It was a very good Thursday for Polish tennis at the Wuhan Open. Maja Chwalińska and Iga Świątek both beat American opponents to book their places in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 event. Chwalińska, ranked 22nd in the world, upset 11th-ranked Iva Jović 6-4, 6-1. Świątek, her former junior doubles partner, followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ashlyn Krueger. For one player it was a statement result, and for the other it was a welcome lift after a tough year.

Chwalińska Makes Her Mark
Chwalińska picked up the decisive break in the ninth game of the first set, which was enough to take it 6-4. The second set was a different story. She took control and reeled off five games in a row to close out the match, her third straight win in Wuhan.

The 25-year-old has had a season to remember, having reached the French Open final earlier this year. Her next challenge comes on Friday, when she meets Greece's Maria Sakkari with a semifinal spot at stake.

Świątek Finds Some Rhythm
Świątek, the former world No. 1, has dropped to ninth in the rankings after a difficult season, but she looked sharp here. She dominated the opening set against Krueger, though the American pushed back harder in the second. Świątek held firm and finished the job in one hour and 35 minutes, converting her third match point.

She seemed pleased with how things are going. "I'm playing better than at the beginning of the season. It was a good, interesting match, especially in the second set," she said after the win.

The result also keeps her hopes alive of reaching the WTA Finals, the season-ending event for the year's eight best performers, where only two places remain. Next up for Świątek is either American Ann Li or Indonesia's Janice Tjen.
