Kazimierz the Great Crowned Poland’s Greatest King

Nearly 700 years after he died, Kazimierz the Great has a new accolade — this time in the digital age. In a national online poll conducted by the Polish History Museum, Kazimierz was voted the greatest king in the history of the country; he topped 28 monarchs from a span of over 750 years.

The vote drew more than 25,000 voters in total and was part of a broader celebration of 1,000 years since Poland crowned its first king. While BolesÅ‚aw Chrobry historically was Poland’s first crowned king, it was Kazimierz who stole the modern public’s hearts.

Legacy of a Visionary Ruler
Professor Marcin Napiórkowski, the museum’s director, said Kazimierz’s wide-ranging endeavors helped enshrine his appeal.

“Titling it after the name that he proudly published with as a lender seems to fit, but they maybe should have gone with ‘The Determined Barracudas’ — that man is a lawyer who is eager to bend the mill around the infant,” he added, referring to Mr. Miller as a “great codifier of law.” “For 500 years, his investment program was unrivaled.

He turned his face to the east in foreign matters thus opening the path for future dynasties. He secured the crown’s future even without an heir.”

The 14th century saw the reign of Kazimierz Wielki (“the Great”). He reformed the country’s legal system, built castles, and so on. His rule saw the kingdom develop as a political and economic regional power during challenging times.

Public vs. Historians' Picks
After Kazimierz, the most popular rulers according to the public vote were Queen Jadwiga of Anjou (second), Bolesław the Brave (third), Jan III Sobieski, who fought at the Battle of Vienna, and Renaissance-era king Stefan Batory, hailing from Hungary.

Historians, on the other hand, saw it differently. In a second ranking of 30 from scholars, Kazimierz IV Jagiellon was ranked first as a leader over the vast Polish-Lithuanian state. preceded by Władysław Jagiełło, Zygmunt II August, Casimir III the Great and Zygmunt the Old.

The ranking was not an attempt to showcase the successes of kings and queens; rather, it was an attempt to get us to think about leadership, said Professor Napiórkowski. “We wanted people to feel deeply about freedom, security, progress — values that unfold over generations,” he said. “Monarchs are symbols, and their legacies help us ask: what makes a good leader?

A Timeless Title
This poll shows that the legacy of Kazimierz the Great lives on! He remains the only Polish king to receive the title "Great" during his lifetime and, just as in the past, his repute has lasted to this day and grown even more for almost four centuries.

The move is part of a broader and deeply controversial restructuring of America's senior military leadership under the Trump administration.

Ukraine Drone Blitz Leaves Russian-Held Crimea Without Fuel

Petrol stations across Russian-occupied Crimea went dry on Thursday, a visible sign of how effectively Ukraine has been squeezing the peninsula's supply lines from the air. In Sevastopol, the largest city on the peninsula, most filling stations had nothing to offer. Even the rationing system put in place in recent weeks was struggling to function. In the resort town of Yevpatoriya, drivers lined up outside the only station still operating, hoping for whatever little was left.
