This outstanding performance placed Poland as the top-ranked team in Europe. The global contest concluded on Saturday in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, where 641 students from 112 countries competed.

Poland tied for fourth place with Japan, ranking behind China, the United States, and South Korea. The Polish team outperformed other strong competitors, including Israel, India, Singapore, Vietnam, Turkey, and Hong Kong.

This year marked Poland's best IMO result since 1973, when the competition featured just 15 countries.

Medals and Mentors Behind Poland's Success
The Polish gold medalists were Stanisław Lada, Magdalena Pudełko, and Jakub Świcar, while Mateusz Wawrzyniak, Michał Wolny, and Antoni Mazur secured silver medals.

The team was coached by Dominik Burek and Tomasz Cieśla. Their combined effort led to a historic achievement for Poland in international mathematics.

Russian Participation Sparks Controversy
This year's event also witnessed controversy regarding Russia's participation. After a 2022 ban due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the IMO allowed Russian students to compete following a vote (62-23).

However, their results were marked unofficial and excluded from the final rankings.

Ukraine, also a participant, expressed disappointment over these decisions. Additionally, Ukraine was denied hosting rights for the 2024 event, which was moved to Bath, England, due to the ongoing war.

Ukrainian representatives stressed their view that Russia's actions against Ukrainian education and children should disqualify it from such events.

Russia Kills 13 in Overnight Strikes on Kyiv and Ukrainian Cities

Another devastating night fell across Ukraine as Russia launched a wave of missile and drone attacks targeting multiple cities, leaving 13 people dead and dozens wounded. The strikes hit residential areas, set apartment buildings on fire, and sent rescue teams scrambling through the darkness. Among the dead was a 12-year-old child — a detail that laid bare the human cost of a war that continues to show no mercy toward civilians.

Poland Revives Military Medical School to Fix Defence Healthcare Crisis

Poland is taking a decisive step to fix one of its most overlooked defence weaknesses. The government has approved a draft law to bring back a military medical academy in the city of Łódź — an institution that was shut down over two decades ago. If parliament gives the green light, the academy could be up and running as early as July this year, with the first classes expected to begin in 2027. The move signals a growing recognition that building a stronger army is only half the equation — keeping soldiers alive on the battlefield is the other half.

Estonia Arrests Record 16 Russian Intelligence Collaborators

Estonia had a landmark year in counterintelligence. The country's Internal Security Service, known as KAPO, revealed that 16 collaborators working on behalf of Russian intelligence were identified and stopped in the past year alone — the highest number ever recorded in a single year. It's a figure that speaks volumes about how aggressively Moscow is pushing to extend its reach into the small Baltic nation, and how hard Estonian authorities are working to push back.
KAPO's annual security yearbook, released Monday, made one thing crystal clear: Russia, driven by what the agency described as an "imperialist mindset," remains Estonia's most serious and enduring security threat.
