WhatsApp Says Russia Trying to Block Its Services

In a statement, WhatsApp said that the effort clearly targets its support for secure communication and reliably stated that Russia is attempting to block the service. The Meta Platforms-owned messaging service also said that it would carry on with its plans to bring its encrypted services to people in Russia.

Russian authorities are now reportedly blocking some calls on third-party apps, arguing that foreign-owned platforms have not done enough to help security services access such data in cases of fraud and counter-terrorism.

WhatsApp is banned in Russia while this rule stays as it's supposed to be a private and end-to-end encrypted application that prevents the government from intruding on the right of privacy for over a hundred million Russian people," the company said.

The company also noted that it continues to be committed to making end-to-end encrypted communication available worldwide, including in Russia, albeit with limitations.
