A Palestinian doctor has died from serious injuries he sustained in an airstrike in Gaza on 23 May, according to reports. The strike, which targeted the family’s house in Khan Younis, killed nine of his children and critically wounded the 10th. Hamdi had just come back home after recently taking his wife, Dr Alaa al-Najjar, to Nasser Hospital, where the two worked.
He was hospitalized with serious brain and internal organ injuries that he died from Saturday. Now, only Alaa and their 11-year-old son Adam, who is in the hospital with severe injuries, have survived the attack.
Aftermath of the Attack
The Israel Defense Forces said the airstrike was on “an individual” seen near some of its soldiers in Khan Younis, which had been evacuated earlier. They added that the area was a high risk combat zone and said the incident was under review after assertions of civilian casualties.
Doctors treating the family said that Hamdi had suffered extensive damage to his brain, lungs, arm and kidney. Their son Adam was critically injured, his arm nearly severed and his body pocked with shrapnel and deep cuts.
International Help for Adam
Italy has agreed to treat Adam, after an emotional letter from his uncle, Dr Ali al-Najjar. The Italian government has now offered to move Adam to one of their hospitals and is ‘considering the ways in which it will be possible’ to do so.
Conflict and Its Toll on Civilians
The conflict started when Hamas carried out a lethal crossborder assault on 7 October 2023, where 1,200 people were killed, and another 251 were taken as hostages. Since then, over 54,418 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza, the local health ministry says. Dr Hamdi al-Najjar died this month, a stark reminder of the heavy price the long-running conflict has exacted on families across the region.

Officers of the Polish Border Guard have intercepted a drone carrying approximately 400 packets of smuggled cigarettes believed to have originated from Belarus. The drone was discovered in a wooded area located in the vicinity of Krynki in the province of Podlaskie, which is close to the border with Belarus. Officials stated that the operation commenced after a nearby resident notified the authorities, leading to police and fire services attending to the scene and securing it.
The Border Guard reported that all of the cigarette packets had Belarusian excise stamps. "Inside the drone, Border Guard officers found about 400 packs of cigarettes. Further actions in this case are being undertaken by the Border Guard," officials said.
On Monday, Hamas let go of the first wave of Israeli hostages as part of a peace agreement designed to conclude two years of violence in Gaza. This is a definitive step toward peace in the region, as negotiations are undertaken by U.S. President Donald Trump and others.
