Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, is near the Russian border and has been rocked repeatedly by missile and drone attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of the country over three years earlier.

The strike caused a fire in a multi-storey apartment block, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. The Shevchenkivskyi district area of the city suffered most of the injuries, regional governor Oleh Sinehubov said, underlining how the impact affected a number of city blocks. Emergency services are still working at the scene to evaluate and repair the damage.

No Immediate Response from Moscow
The full extent of the destruction from the recent attack was not immediately clear. Russia has not commented on the strikes. Both Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians, though the war has caused thousands of deaths among noncombatants, the majority of them Ukrainian.

Wider Attacks Across Ukraine
A Russian strike in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine on Sunday afternoon killed two people and injured two others. Some 20 buildings were also damaged, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

In the capital city Kyiv, an overnight drone attack caused damage to buildings and vehicles across three of the city’s ten districts. No injuries were reported in the incident, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities are ongoing and civilian areas have been left unprotected despite international appeals for restraint and the protection of non-combatants.

Thousands in Warsaw Protest EU Climate Policy, Demand Referendum

Warsaw's streets were filled with protesters on Wednesday as thousands gathered to push back against the European Union's climate agenda. The march, organized by the Solidarność trade union, moved through the heart of the Polish capital with one clear demand — a national referendum on whether Poland should continue to follow the EU's climate obligations. It was a loud, visible show of discontent, and it drew significant backing from conservative and far-right opposition lawmakers who have long been critical of Brussels-driven environmental policy.

Merz Proposes Special EU Associate Status for Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has put forward a fresh idea to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union without rushing it through full membership. In a letter shared with EU leaders, Merz proposed creating a brand-new status called "associate member" — a middle ground that would give Ukraine a seat at the table in EU summits and ministerial meetings, though without voting rights. The move is being seen as a creative workaround for a country still at war, and one that could help shape a realistic path forward in ongoing peace negotiations.
