Russian Drone Strike Hits Odesa, One Killed

A Russian drone strike overnight on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa killed one person and injured at least 14 others. The Ukraine State Emergency Service said the attack was "massive" and struck residential areas, setting fires and forcing hundreds to flee.

It was a strike that began at 1 a.m. local time and struck eight different areas across the city. More than 600 residents were evacuated from one of the affected buildings. Three firefighters were among those injured and were taken to a hospital but were reported to be in stable condition.

Train Station Infrastructure Affected, Too
The city's main train station was also damaged in the attack. Overhead lines, rails and sleepers were damaged, the national railway company of Ukraine, Ukrzaliznytsia said, adding there were no injuries among staff at the station.

Odesa, a strategic port city on the Black Sea, has faced several attacks since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The latest airstrike is the latest in a series of such attacks that have led to the death of dozens in the past weeks.

Rising Violence Even as Peace Talks Continue
At the same time that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are underway in Istanbul, Russian forces have stepped up their attacks on key Ukrainian cities. On June 17, Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Kyiv, resulting in heavy casualties including more than 24 dead. The ongoing bloodshed undercuts progress in diplomatic efforts and underscores the continuing risks for civilians throughout the country.
