Trump was open about the emotional weight of the situation, pointing to what he sees as deep-seated animosity between the two leaders as one of the biggest obstacles to peace. He noted that hatred between Putin and Zelenskyy is, in his words, "ridiculous" and "crazy," and acknowledged that such hostility makes reaching any agreement significantly harder. Still, he remained hopeful. "Hate is a bad thing when you're trying to settle something, but it'll happen," he said, striking a tone that blended frustration with resolve.

A Promise Still Waiting to Be Fulfilled
Trump had made ending the Russia-Ukraine war a central promise of his return to the White House. The conflict, which escalated into a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, continues to grind on. Now more than a year into his second term, that pledge remains unfulfilled. Despite the slow progress, Trump did not indicate stepping back from his role as a would-be mediator, suggesting the diplomatic push is still very much underway.
