Sergei Tikhanovsky Among 14 Recently Released Political Prisoners The release of Sergei Tikhanovsky is a tremendous breakthrough for the opposition public movement and Belarus, as a country in which the authorities institute a wave of political repression.

Tikhanovsky, who led a high-profile national election campaign in 2020, was serving a long prison term. The deal’s initiators, the U.S., have made a considerable effort to ease the political tension and improve the diplomatic dialogue.

Hundreds Dozens of Political Prisoners Still in Detention under Lukashenko’s Rule Despite this release, the situation with human rights remains tense. Among them is Poczobut, a prominent journalist and prominent figure of the Polish community in Belarus. Masking the political opposition and freedom of speech are two essential points of Lukashenko’s repressive policy in this regard.

For these reasons, the release of Tikhanovsky and other opposition figures should be placed within the restricted frame of the latest opening.
