Belarus Frees Tikhanovsky After US Talks, Others Remain

Belarus Releases Opposition Activist due to US-brokered Deal Belarusian opposition activist Sergei Tikhanovsky has been released from prison following a deal brokered by the United States. Thirteen other political prisoners were also released.

Despite the positive signal, a significant number of political prisoners, including well-known journalist Andrzej Poczobut, continue to live behind bars.

Sergei Tikhanovsky Among 14 Recently Released Political Prisoners The release of Sergei Tikhanovsky is a tremendous breakthrough for the opposition public movement and Belarus, as a country in which the authorities institute a wave of political repression.

Tikhanovsky, who led a high-profile national election campaign in 2020, was serving a long prison term. The deal’s initiators, the U.S., have made a considerable effort to ease the political tension and improve the diplomatic dialogue.
