CPAC Postpones Belgrade Event to 2027 After Vučić Loss

The Conservative Political Action Conference, better known as CPAC, has pushed back its first-ever Balkan event until 2027. The decision comes just weeks after Aleksandar Vučić lost a parliamentary election in Serbia, a result that has shaken the country's political scene.

A Keynote Speaker Without a Platform
CPAC Belgrade was set for November 18 in the Serbian capital, and Vučić was lined up to deliver the keynote speech. Then the vote in October changed everything. Vučić had stepped down as president to run for prime minister, but a political movement that grew out of student-led anti-corruption protests across the country beat him at the ballot box.

The timing has raised eyebrows. Still, CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp has dismissed any link between the two events. Speaking to the independent Serbian platform Insajder, he said the organizers simply aimed too high. "We were overly ambitious in thinking we could hold it in November," he explained, adding that the group looks forward to an impactful conference next year.

What CPAC Wanted in the Balkans
When it announced the plan in October, CPAC said it wanted to build a presence in southeastern Europe. The group described the region as Europe's most strategically important, and it hoped to grow its network of conservative leaders opposed to globalism and the radical left. Energy was expected to top the agenda in Belgrade.

This would not have been CPAC's first step abroad. Besides its main yearly gathering in the United States, which has hosted Donald Trump and other leading MAGA figures, the organization has held events in Italy, Brazil, Israel and Japan. It has also visited Hungary, where populist leader Viktor Orbán is a regular guest.

In Israel right now, one number keeps coming up in every political conversation: 61. That is how many seats a party or bloc needs to control the 120-member parliament. Yet heading into Tuesday's general election, neither the right-wing prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, nor his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, looks sure to get there. Hans-Jakob Schindler, senior director at the Counter Extremism Project, a US-based non-profit organization, says the coalition math could leave the opposition frustrated even if it does well on the day.

Stubb Asks Musk To Expand Starlink For Ukraine

Finnish President Alexander Stubb revealed on Thursday that he had personally appealed to SpaceX chief Elon Musk to extend Starlink satellite internet coverage so Ukraine could target Russian ballistic missile launchers sitting inside Russian territory. With colder months approaching, Kyiv is grappling with a severe shortage of air defense capabilities needed to fend off these missile attacks, and officials there believe activating Starlink over Russian soil would give them a better shot at hitting the launchers responsible for firing them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described his Tuesday sit-down with US President Donald Trump as a "good meeting," one that centered on licensing Ukraine to build its own missile interceptors and finding a way to restart stalled peace negotiations with Russia. The conversation took place privately in the Oval Office, ahead of an afternoon memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham. It was a busy day for Zelenskyy, who also sat down with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at a Washington hotel and met separately with US senators at the Capitol.
