Stubb Asks Musk To Expand Starlink For Ukraine

Speaking about his request, Stubb explained that giving Ukrainian forces access to Starlink in zones where ballistic launchers are stationed, whether in Russian-occupied Ukrainian land or within Russia itself, would serve a strategic purpose and ultimately save lives. The Finnish leader, known for his strong backing of Ukraine and his solid rapport with US President Donald Trump, shared these comments during an interview conducted in New York, where global leaders had gathered for the annual United Nations assembly.

Zelenskyy Pushes For Limited Ceasefire
During the same UN gathering, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a strong case for ceasefire arrangements that would specifically protect energy infrastructure and Black Sea vessels from attack. So far, Russia hasn't signalled any public interest in agreeing to such terms.

More than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Ukrainian officials worry that Moscow intends to methodically dismantle power and heating infrastructure once deep winter sets in. Adding to those concerns, Russia's ballistic missile usage hit unprecedented levels over the summer months. Currently, Ukraine's Patriot systems are the only defense capable of intercepting these missiles, but supplies of interceptor ammunition are running dangerously low, and it remains uncertain where replacements might come from.

Musk activated Starlink service over Ukrainian territory not long after Russia's 2022 invasion began, and the network has since become essential to Ukraine's military communications and its drone operations on the battlefield. While Starlink doesn't currently function over Russian soil, Ukrainian officials believe enabling it there would let their forces strike mobile missile launchers positioned within several hundred kilometers of the border.

Winter Needs And Peace Talk Prospects
Looking toward the colder months ahead, Stubb outlined three priorities for Ukraine. Air defense tops the list, with Starlink itself potentially serving as a partial solution in that regard. Securing energy infrastructure for winter comes second, and funding rounds out the list. Stubb noted that a winter support package is currently being assembled, since he doesn't anticipate the conflict winding down before the season arrives.

Stubb also welcomed the resumption of US-brokered peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which restarted in August following visits from American envoys to both Moscow and Kyiv. He suggested that the most straightforward path forward would be an unconditional ceasefire, essentially halting the violence altogether, echoing sentiments Trump expressed during his UN General Assembly address. From there, Stubb said, discussions could move on to matters like security guarantees, territorial questions, rebuilding efforts, and compensation.

One possibility he raised involves freezing the conflict along the current front line, with buffer zones extending 30 kilometers on either side. Failing that, he pointed to a partial ceasefire focused specifically on energy and grain-related targets as the next best alternative.
