Polish Diver Breaks Deepest Cave Dive Record at 338 Meters

Polish diver Bartłomiej Pitala has set a new world record by descending 338 meters into an underwater cave in North Macedonia. His dive goes 26 meters beyond the previous deepest cave dive. Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed the achievement, but the news has already stirred plenty of talk in the diving world.

Months of Planning, Minutes of Descent
The dive took place in the Vrelo cave and followed months of careful preparation. A team of support divers tracked Pitala's progress, while emergency medical staff waited nearby in case something went wrong.

Pitala dropped to the bottom of the main shaft, 212 meters down, in just five minutes. From there, he swam along a 100-meter horizontal stretch until he reached a passage that plunged almost straight down. In a social media post, he described how tense that moment was. Within seconds, he had to decide which of the dark gaps in the chamber walls led onward. Soon after, he passed the 300-meter mark.

A Choice Made in the Deep
Conditions looked good, so Pitala decided to go further. His team had planned for him to spend no more than 45 seconds in a newly discovered section before turning back. That limit kept the whole dive within eight hours, a window considered fairly safe for divers.

He pushed past it, turning around only at 338 meters. According to Pitala, the cave keeps going deeper, though nobody knows how far. He recalled telling himself that the cave sets the path, and that it was now offering a chance that might never come again. "I was the deepest man on Earth," he said.

Eight Hours to Get Home
The trip back was far from easy. Pitala spent more than eight exhausting hours on decompression as he slowly rose to the surface. Looking back, he said the team had stretched the limits of what people and equipment were once thought capable of.
