Poland Slams Russia's 2030 World Weightlifting Championships Hosting Rights

Poland's weightlifting body has strongly criticized the decision to give Moscow the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships. The Polish Weightlifting Federation says the choice calls into question the credibility of international sports institutions and seems to ignore the war still raging in Ukraine. The announcement came on Sunday, and it makes Russia the first country to be handed a global event in an Olympic sport since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Poland Questions the Logic
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) made the move just four months after it allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete again under their national flags and symbols. For Poland, the timing stings even more. Earlier this year, the country lost the right to host two major youth weightlifting events after it refused entry to Russian and Belarusian athletes.

The Polish federation said the decision could not be seen only through the lens of sport. "It is as if it has been forgotten that the war in Ukraine, started by Russia, is still ongoing," it said. It also wondered whether international sports bodies apply consistent standards and base their decisions on clearly defined criteria when dealing with different countries. Its sharpest question was whether these organizations weigh the wider political picture with the same consistency when a choice benefits Russia.

Russia's Slow Return to Global Sport
On Sunday, the IWF named host cities for four world championships at the junior, youth and senior levels. Moscow got the 2030 senior event, while Ahmedabad in India will stage the 2029 edition.

The decision is one more step in bringing Russian athletes back into international competition after the restrictions that followed the invasion. In July, the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. That could open the door for Russian athletes to represent their country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Until now, no world championships in an Olympic sport had been held in Russia since 2022. The 2025 World Aquatics Championships, first awarded to Kazan, were moved to Singapore.

Poland's own experience adds context. In January, it was stripped of the 2026 European Junior and U-23 Weightlifting Championships, which were set for September, because it would not guarantee entry visas for Russian and Belarusian competitors. The events were held in Albania in October instead. The European Weightlifting Federation said the change was needed so that all eligible athletes could take part.
