Draft mocks and public criticism
"Do not believe tabloids. No one was hiding. No one was under arrest. I went to the military registration and enlistment office today and received a call-up. We are off to serve", Macan wrote on Instagram.
Pro-government channels have reported that Kosolapov had ignored six draft notices earlier this year and may face prosecution under Article 328 of Russia's Criminal Code, which provides for avoiding military service, punishment of up to two years of imprisonment. Kosolapov's apparent non-compliance incited backlash from pro-war bloggers, informally known as "Z-bloggers", criticizing him for his hypocrisy and cowardice.
Macan and Russia's rap scene
Macan is a major figure in Russia's "lad rap" scene, based on street-culture aesthetics, working-class masculinity, and youth-based themes. He was named Artist of the Year with Yandex Music in 2024, and has won the designation for three years with VK Music.
Critics now suggest that Kosolapov's going to the military means shedding his youthfully rebellious image to align with the Kremlin's increasing influence on cultural figures during wartime.
Other Russian rappers have dealt with the same scrutiny. In May 2024, Vacio (Nikolai Vasilyev) allegedly fled to the United States after being called to military service, while longtime Kremlin ally Timati (Timur Yunusov) released a military-themed clothing line but never served in the military, calling the experience "a useless waste of time." Timati has been accused of participating in propaganda efforts alongside the Ukrainian State Security Service.
