Ukraine Military Reshuffle Called a Democratic Victory

A Sign That Civil Society Still Has a Voice
Freudenstein, who co-founded the Brussels Freedom Hub, a Brussels-based advocacy and policy organization, framed the reshuffle as proof that public pressure and civic engagement in Ukraine haven't been sidelined by the ongoing conflict. In his view, the shift also represents a pushback against entrenched, corruption-linked political networks that have long shaped parts of the country's establishment.

He drew a generational contrast between the key figures involved. Former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov and the newly appointed commander-in-chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, both belong to a generation that came of age politically during Ukraine's 2014 Maidan revolution, Freudenstein noted. Outgoing army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, by comparison, represents an older military tradition with ties stretching back to the Soviet period.

Striking Deep Inside Russian Territory
On the battlefield, Freudenstein suggested Ukraine's most effective current strategy isn't focused on reclaiming large swaths of occupied land, but rather on carrying out long-range strikes deep within Russia itself. He described this approach as the area where Ukrainian forces are seeing the strongest results right now, pointing specifically to disruptions in Russian fuel supply chains and mounting strain on the broader Russian economy.

The underlying goal, according to Freudenstein, is to corner Vladimir Putin into a difficult choice: pull back on the invasion or risk destabilizing his own grip on power domestically.

As for Fedorov's future, Freudenstein doesn't expect him to step straight back into the defense minister role. Instead, he floated the possibility of Fedorov taking on a different but still influential position, one centred on military innovation and technology. Even in that capacity, Freudenstein argued, such a move would still count as a win for Ukrainian civil society.
