Świątek Cruises Past Wang to Open US Open Campaign

Iga Świątek made a confident start to her US Open journey on Monday, brushing aside China's Wang Xiyu 6-2, 6-3 to book her spot in the second round. The Polish eighth seed, a former champion at Flushing Meadows, looked sharp and settled from the very first point, needing just 88 minutes to close out the contest.

A Strong Season Building Momentum
Świątek arrived in New York carrying plenty of confidence after a mixed year on tour. She picked up her first title of the season in Toronto earlier this month and backed that up with a semi-final appearance in Cincinnati. That form clearly carried over onto the court against Wang, as the 25-year-old looked comfortable despite the hard-court swing traditionally being one of her trickier stretches of the calendar.

Speaking after the match, Świątek admitted she was pleased with how things unfolded. "For sure it was a good day in the office," she said, adding that she felt strong and energetic from the opening games. She also noted that Wang's heavy topspin game demanded extra physicality from her side, but she matched it well throughout.

Świątek Takes Control Under the Lights
Playing under the lights at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Świątek raced out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set before sealing it with a break, helped along by a Wang forehand that drifted long. She stayed on top of things in the second set too, breaking serve in the eighth game to put the result beyond doubt.

With the win, Świątek, who lifted the US Open trophy back in 2022, now turns her attention to a second-round meeting with Nadia Podoroska, who earlier defeated Simona Waltert. Świątek said she's focused on sharpening the finer details of her game as the tournament progresses, aiming to build on the positive momentum she's carried into Flushing Meadows this year.
