Shakhtar Donetsk to Play Champions League Games at Chelsea

A New Home After Years on the Move
The Ukrainian side has been unable to play in Donetsk since Russia's war in eastern Ukraine began in 2014, and had previously used venues in Germany and Poland to stage its home matches. This time, Chelsea will step in as hosts. In a statement released on Friday, the London club said they were looking forward to welcoming Shakhtar to London for the Champions League season, adding that they'd be working closely with the Ukrainian side over the coming weeks to make sure matchdays go smoothly for both players and supporters. Chelsea themselves failed to qualify for this year's competition.

Shakhtar responded warmly to the arrangement, calling it a special opportunity and thanking Chelsea for the chance to play at such a historic venue. The club described Stamford Bridge as one of football's most iconic grounds, saying they believed their matches there would create unforgettable moments for fans from both Ukraine and England.

Abramovich Sanctions Still Loom Over the Deal
The agreement still needs regulatory sign-off, and it arrives against the backdrop of an unresolved situation involving Abramovich, who has remained under UK sanctions since 2022 over claimed ties to Vladimir Putin, allegations he has denied. Facing pressure from those sanctions, Abramovich sold Chelsea in 2022 and pledged that close to €3 billion from the sale would go toward supporting people affected by the war in Ukraine. That money, however, still hasn't been handed over. Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly called on Abramovich last year to release the funds, with British officials saying the holdup centers on Abramovich's objection to the government's insistence that the money be spent exclusively within Ukraine.

On the pitch, Shakhtar have built a strong European reputation over the years, winning 15 domestic league titles since their first triumph in 2002, lifting the UEFA Cup in 2009, and reaching the semifinals of major European competitions three times in the past decade. Since being pushed out of Donetsk in 2014, the club has shifted its home matches between several cities, including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv, Hamburg and Warsaw.
