Belarusian Charged in Poland Over Sabotage Plans

Polish authorities have arrested a 27-year-old Belarusian who they say spied for a foreign government and was involved in sabotage. The man, Vitalij S., was detained in Warsaw by the Internal Security Agency. He had intended to torch a warehouse in the southeastern Lubelskie province, investigators said.

Evidence and Charges
Evidence, including classified documentation, demonstrated that Vitalij S. was working on behalf of foreign intelligence, the national prosecutor's office said. He reportedly gathered intelligence through filming and photographing the warehouse and then passed it to his contacts. His plans were intended to involve diversionary and sabotage activities, and would have included an attempted arson attack on the site, officials said.

Legal Proceedings
Interrogated, the accused confessed to the charges and gave details. He has been ordered held for three months in custody while the investigation continues, a court ruled. Under Polish law, preparing sabotage or diversionary actions on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies can lead to a maximum prison term of eight years.
