Erin Patterson – Testimony in Mushroom Poisoning Trial – Updated Erin Patterson, whose daughter Shayna De Oliveira, has also taken the stand to testify in the poisoning trial in which her granddaughter is the victim.
The woman who the prosecution says killed three family members and seriously poisoned another through a meal of alleged toxic mushrooms has taken the witness stand at her trial.
She is charged with four serious counts – three for murder and one for attempted murder – in connection with a beef wellington lunch served at her home in regional Victoria in July 2023.
Was It A Crime Of Passion, Or Just A SNAP Decision?
Patterson deliberately cooked with “death cap” mushrooms rather than the former ingredients, misled investigators and attempted to cover up the crime, the prosecution said. They claim her actions were intentional and premeditated.
But her defence argues that she never intended to hurt anyone and that the poisonings were a tragic accident. She panicked, according to her lawyers, when she realised what had taken place, and acted in fear.
Three of them died after the meal: Don Patterson, 70, Gail Patterson, 70, her former in-laws, and Heather Wilkinson, 66, her sister. The sole survivor was Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor, and he spent several weeks in hospital recuperating.
Patterson on Family Ties and Personal Struggles
The jury has heard from over 50 prosecution witnesses during six weeks of evidence, including Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon, and Ian Wilkinson. Now, the defence has started to put forth its case, with Patterson being the first to take the stand.
The 50-year-old described how her relationship had grown increasingly cold with the Patterson family, specifically Don and Gail, by 2023. “We also saw each other less,” she told the court, and she said she believed Simon no longer wished her to remain closely involved with his family.
She thought about her tumultuous relationship with Simon, noting that, not only were they not a couple that argued all the time, they simply couldn’t find a way to communicate when they did not see eye to eye. “We would only feel hurt and trapped,” she said.
Emotion Reminiscence of the Past
Patterson also shared that she endured a harrowing birth with her first child in 2009 in which she had to undergo an emergency caesarean when the baby was in distress. “We are quite desperate,” she said, her voice breaking, describing how, against the medical advice of her doctors, she stormed out of the hospital early because she didn’t want to be alone.
The court had previously heard that Patterson was sent home from hospital after being examined following the fatal lunch and it was evidence of a possible illness that she denied being on the day the teenager died, prosecutors claimed. But her lawyer, Colin Mandy, said that she had a history of doing this under other circumstances, too.
Patterson testified for less than an hour before court ended for the day. Her evidence is due to continue on Tuesday.
