Bodies of 12 Bus Crash Victims Return to Poland

The bodies of twelve Polish nationals who lost their lives in a coach crash in Hungary were flown back to Poland on Wednesday, arriving aboard two military transport planes. Officials confirmed the repatriation as autopsies were set to begin, scheduled to take place over Thursday and Friday in the southern city of Kraków.

Poland's prosecutors are now pushing for a change in how the case is being handled. They want the country's justice minister and prosecutor general to formally request control of the investigation from Hungarian authorities, arguing that since every victim was a Polish citizen, and the driver facing charges is Polish too, the case should be pursued closer to home.

Injured Passengers Still Receiving Treatment
Not everyone involved in the crash has returned to Poland yet. Three people remain hospitalized in Hungary, and there are plans to move them home once doctors decide they're well enough to travel. Separately, three more passengers are currently being treated in Rzeszów, a city in southeastern Poland. Everyone else who was on board has already returned to their families.

What Happened on the M3 Motorway
The accident unfolded in the early hours of August 16 on Hungary's M3 motorway, close to the town of Mezőkeresztes. The coach was carrying 59 Polish passengers returning home after a pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following the crash, Hungarian prosecutors charged the driver with negligently causing a road accident that led to multiple deaths. He remains in custody, with detention extended until September 18 as the investigation continues.
