Chinese paraglider survives extreme flight without oxygen

A Chinese paraglider was plunged into a life-threatening ordeal when a sudden updraft carried him into the upper atmosphere while flying over the Qilian Mountains in Gansu Province on Saturday. While Peng reached an estimated height of 8,598 meters (about 28,208 feet) before oxygen was no longer available, enduring freezing temperatures and disorienting conditions emerged from his ordeal surrounded by thick cloud cover. Video images show ice clinging to his face and clothes as he fell through the frigid air.

Peng had just bought a second-hand paragliding harness and was trying it out on the ground when he was suddenly blown into the air by strong winds, media reported. “I attempted to land right away, but I couldn’t,” he said. Trapped in high cumulonimbus convection, he lost all reference to the surface. “Everything was white. I would have never known where I was going without my compass. I felt like I was flying straight, but I was actually just spinning.” Peng somehow got out of the cloud system finally when he came to the northeast.

Ordeal at Extreme Altitude and Close Call
"Reports suggest that Peng was shocked with the result, he did not notice how high he was flying and thinks that he might have either fainted or fallen asleep for some time. Although his hands froze painfully numb, he was able to control his paraglider with a compass and remain in radio contact with his team.

Peng, who has been paragliding for more than four years, has obtained a certificate at B-level in paragliding that means he can fly for at least 20 days. It was being well-trained and highly experienced that must have helped him to take control and survive.

Relief — and Reflection — After the Flight
Looking back on the most terrifying moments, Peng recounted the terror that gripped him when his canopy went into a nosedive and he tried to recover from a perilous spiral. “It’s still scary to think about,” he conceded. When he finally burst out of the clouds, he felt nothing but pure relief. “I was thrilled, because I came through.”

Trump Says U.S. Needs No Help to End Iran War

U.S. President Donald Trump made his position unmistakably clear on Tuesday — he does not need Beijing's help to resolve the ongoing war with Iran. Speaking ahead of a high-profile summit in China, Trump brushed aside the idea of enlisting President Xi Jinping to push Tehran toward a peace deal, even as the conflict continues to strangle one of the world's most critical oil routes. "We'll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise," he told reporters with characteristic confidence.

Russia Kills Six in Ukraine After Ceasefire Expires

Any fragile hope of peace evaporated quickly. Just hours after a U.S.-brokered three-day ceasefire expired on Monday, Russian forces launched a wave of attacks across Ukraine, killing at least six people in the Dnipropetrovsk region alone. Ukrainian officials confirmed that Russia sent more than 200 drones overnight, effectively slamming the door on any possibility of extending the truce that had been tied to the anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

North Korea Earns $14 Billion Supplying Russia's War Machine

There is a country watching the war in Ukraine very closely — not with fear, but with a calculator. North Korea has been quietly supplying Russia with weapons and soldiers since the conflict escalated, and the money flowing back to Pyongyang has been eye-watering. South Korea's National Intelligence Service puts the total earned over the past three years at somewhere around $14 billion. To put that in perspective, that is roughly half of everything North Korea produces economically in an entire year.
