EU-Mercosur Deal Shows Early Benefits for Poland

A Deal Poland Never Wanted
The trade agreement between the European Union and the South American bloc Mercosur was finalized back in January and officially took effect in May. Poland fought the deal at every turn, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk stating earlier this year that his government had opposed it throughout the entire process.

Brussels, along with major EU economies like Germany and Spain, pitched the agreement as essential to opening new export markets and cutting the bloc's dependence on Chinese supply chains, particularly for critical minerals, while also cushioning the economic blow from ongoing US tariffs. But Poland wasn't alone in pushing back. France, the EU's biggest agricultural producer, joined Warsaw in warning that the deal would flood European markets with cheap imports like beef, poultry, and sugar, putting local farmers at a serious disadvantage.

The Numbers Tell a Different Story So Far
Despite all that resistance, Poland's agriculture ministry announced on Wednesday that the deal's opening month actually delivered positive results for Polish agricultural trade, with food imports from Mercosur countries actually declining rather than surging as feared.

Early figures suggest Polish goods are finding real demand in Mercosur markets. Exports to the bloc reached €5.9 million in May, up from €4.6 million during the same month a year earlier. The bulk of what Poland shipped out included everyday staples like bread, pastries, cakes, cookies, malt, chocolate, and other cocoa-based products.

Meanwhile, imports flowing the other way, from Mercosur countries into Poland, dropped by 13.3 percent compared to May of last year, landing at €141 million.

The ministry was careful to note that it isn't declaring victory just yet. Officials say they're continuing to keep a close watch on how the agreement affects Polish farmers going forward. They also pointed to ongoing efforts to monitor the safety and quality standards of goods coming in from outside the EU, a direct response to farmers' long-standing worries that South American producers rely on chemicals banned under Polish and EU regulations. According to the ministry, any products failing to meet EU standards are caught during inspection and kept out of the Polish market entirely.
