Leadership at its Best: Effective Leadership in the Real World
Cor Boonstra helmed Philips from 1996 to 2001, through some of Philips' most difficult years. Under his tenure, the company went through major transformation, which included a restructuring of wide-ranging operations and cost reductions. He also jettisoned lackluster divisions, and lobbied for a more nimble marketing of consumer electronics, including televisions. Those actions helped the company double up in stock market performance.

Philips credited Boonstra's stewardship during that period, noting, "His leadership between 1996 and 2001 was instrumental in guiding Philips through a challenging period, building a solid foundation for today's company, and implementing sweeping change, which helped secure the company's future."

Honoring a Respected Leader
Boonstra had repeatedly been voted best manager of the Netherlands. His style of leadership was straight forward and forceful, and he was universally respected in the business community. Philips commended his willingness to make challenging decisions that wound up being good for the company.

"Cor Boonstra leaves a legacy of strong leadership during a crucial moment in the history of Philips," the company said in a tribute. "We pay tribute to his work and our thoughts are with his family and friends."
