Gulf States Consider Low-Cost Interceptor Drones

Countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are exploring the use of a new and inexpensive missile defense system to combat Iranian aerial threats. They have chosen to use drone interceptors designed in Ukraine for approximately $2,500 apiece. Since both Gulf nations and the United States are running out of expensive missile defense systems as the regional conflict continues, the timing of this decision makes sense. One of the companies that will provide this service, Terra Drone, has seen a significant increase in potential Middle Eastern customers for their drone interceptors.

The Lethality of Air Defense Systems
Since the beginning of hostilities in Iran, large numbers of low-complexity, mass-produced attack drones—including those used by Ukraine—have been deployed against the Gulf states and the United States; however, the missile defense systems of the Gulf states and the United States have been high-cost interceptors, which raises questions about how much longer it will be possible to sustain them.

According to Toru Tokushige of Terra Drone, many nations are beginning to reassess the long-term economic viability of their current methods of defense. As a comparison, interceptors can be acquired for about $2,526 (roughly 400,000 yen each), while a Patriot missile interceptor will cost a minimum of $4 million. The Shahed drone, on the other hand, has an estimated price tag of only about $20k. During the first week of Iran's conflict, estimates of the number of drones produced by Iran for use were put at over 1,000, and Iran estimates the capacity to manufacture as many as 10,000 drones per month.

Launch and Development Plans
Recently, Terra Drone formed a partnership with Amazing Drones, a Ukrainian start-up. As a result of this relationship, Terra Drone has developed the Terra A1 interceptor drone, which can be used as an intercepting weapon against aerial threats. In addition to their efforts to create demand for the interceptors on the global market, Terra Drone will provide financing and expertise for manufacturing the product.

The Terra A1 has yet to be tested in actual combat conditions; however, it is the hope of the company to be able to get the drone to the Ukrainian military for testing as soon as they receive the necessary clearance. Furthermore, we are currently working with Saudi Aramco on a plan for the use of commercial drones as a platform for setting up production facilities in the Middle East. Tokushige states that Japan's manufacturing capabilities will provide the base for these technologies once they have reached scale.
