Fast Growing Numbers
Data evaluated by 5 Real Estate shows the British population in Poland has increased by 340 percent from 41,000 in 2015 to almost 185,000 in 2024. This large increase has helped Poland to obtain the seventh ranking on the list of chosen migration countries by UK citizens.

Australia, the US and Canada still form the top three popular choices, and each of the European countries is showing very good growth. Spain is still the most popular European country for Britons, with a global ranking of fourth, with 294,000 people having resident in 2024, which is a slight rise on numbers 10 years earlier.

Romania saw the largest proportional increase, increasing from 6,600 British population in 2015 to 48,700 in 2024, an increase of 636 percent. It is thought this may have been due to migrants, who have spent their working years and migrated to the UK, returning to Romania, where they have citizenship, rather than a new wave of British-born citizens moving country.

The numbers, further evidence of increasing British migration to Eastern Europe, indicate Poland's numbers are likely reflecting both its economic opportunities as well as the now considerable UK resident community in the country. Experts warn, however, that the country has a long way to go before reversing the highly unreliable migration from Eastern Europe to the UK.

Poland Extends Belarus Border Exclusion Zone

Poland has opted to elongate its border exclusion zone (comprising 56 km of its eastern Podlaskie province) adjacent to Belarus for an additional three-month period. This move, aimed at preventing illegal crossings, has been attributed by Poland to being part of Russia's hybrid war through the actions of Belarus. The original establishment of the exclusion zone was in June 2024 for an initial 90-day period. The exclusion zone was created to address illegal border crossings and human trafficking, and subsequently renewed every three months since its initial establishment. The current regulations and rules end on March 4.
