Poland Issues Flood Warnings After Snowmelt

Due to rising air temperatures, rapid snowmelt has resulted in increased river levels in northern and central Poland, causing the issuance of flood warnings in many areas. Local authorities have also indicated that flooding has occurred at multiple locations in the east-central region of Poland, with numerous properties affected as the floodwaters have continued to rise.

In the coming days, meteorologists expect continued warming, which will increase the chances of continued water accumulation and possibly cause additional damage in areas that are currently vulnerable.

IMGW Issues Alerts for Thaw and River Conditions
IMGW, the meteorological institute of Poland, has issued a
thaw warning for the counties of Pomerania and Warmia-Mazury. The agency states that rising temperatures have contributed to the melting of snow cover, causing increased runoff into rivers and streams.
Wind gusts could reach 50 km/h on Sunday, while hydrological warnings will continue to be in effect for much of the northeastern and central parts of Poland, including Mazovia. As a result, many rivers in Poland have exceeded their respective alarm levels.

Flooding and Emergency Response
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the central village of Błędowo experienced flood-related damage to 24 different properties, including summer homes and garages. In response, 56 firefighters and a crisis management team from the Polish government are responding to help residents and manage the situation.

According to IMGW, river levels are likely to continue to fluctuate and rise as a result of frozen water from ice accumulation and continued runoff from rain and snowmelt. In addition, further warming in northern Poland will hasten snowmelt, while fog may also develop in parts of the country, further complicating currently hazardous conditions.

Warsaw's streets were filled with protesters on Wednesday as thousands gathered to push back against the European Union's climate agenda. The march, organized by the Solidarność trade union, moved through the heart of the Polish capital with one clear demand — a national referendum on whether Poland should continue to follow the EU's climate obligations. It was a loud, visible show of discontent, and it drew significant backing from conservative and far-right opposition lawmakers who have long been critical of Brussels-driven environmental policy.

Merz Proposes Special EU Associate Status for Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has put forward a fresh idea to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union without rushing it through full membership. In a letter shared with EU leaders, Merz proposed creating a brand-new status called "associate member" — a middle ground that would give Ukraine a seat at the table in EU summits and ministerial meetings, though without voting rights. The move is being seen as a creative workaround for a country still at war, and one that could help shape a realistic path forward in ongoing peace negotiations.
