Iran Signals Openness to De-Escalation Talks

The rise in tension throughout the Middle East caused by military developments over the weekend has led Iran to suggest they will consider diplomatic approaches for conflict resolution. In response to the multiple attacks perpetrated by both Israeli and U.S. military forces this past weekend, Iran has stated that it is willing to assist with initiatives that seek to de-escalate the current state of unrest and restore regional stability.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed Iran's willingness to support these initiatives during a phone call with Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi regarding efforts to reduce hostilities and to revive dialogue at a time when things are becoming complex and uncertain in the region.

Oman as a Mediator of Diplomatic Crisis Resolution
During their phone call, Abbas Araghchi thanked Oman for its constructive diplomatic role in assisting to mediate the conflict and its ongoing efforts designed to reduce the conflict. The Iranian Government has also conveyed that it is willing to make further substantial efforts to de-escalate the current crisis and return to negotiations.

As a result of mediating discussions regarding the Iranian nuclear program between both Iran and the United States before this latest escalation, Oman has acted as a mediator in previous conflict resolution efforts in the region. In addition, Badr Albusaidi encouraged Iran and other neighboring governments to remain restrained and to avoid taking actions that would disrupt the positive neighborly relations countries in the region have built up over the years.

The Recent Escalation of Regional Conflict
The current situation in the region escalated when the United States and Israeli military conducted an air strike against Iran's military installations during the early morning hours of Saturday, November 17, 2019. In retaliation for the U.S. and Israeli military strikes, Iran subsequently launched missiles towards U.S. military installations in neighbouring nations that provide base access for the U.S. military, thus raising tensions in the region to a higher level of concern.

On Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, was killed as a result of U.S. and Israeli military action. The death of the supreme leader has also raised uncertainties about the stability of the entire region. Even though the advent of military action and diplomatic efforts is in progress to limit further escalation of military conflict and to develop renewed dialogue among the countries in the region, the death of the Iranian supreme leader will likely impede those efforts.
